Sycamore's Adult Sunday School Offerings
Sycamore is firmly "committed to Christ and His Word" and is, therefore, firmly committed to strong Biblical teaching not just from our pulpit but also in our Sunday School classes. Our Sunday school classes are scheduled in three semesters -- Fall, Winter and Spring. Below is a listing of our current offerings:
~ Winter 2012 Schedule ~
Classes start January 15, 2012
The Message of Ecclesiastes ~
Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, all is vanity. Is that what life is? Nothing more than a meaningless wisp of vapor, a puff of wind, a sense of utter futility? These phrases from the book of Ecclesiastes have been found in ancient proverbs and modern music and they still ring true today. What is the message that the wise teacher and author has for modern man? Can wisdom, wealth, and the pursuit of pleasure fill us with meaning? The Message of Ecclesiastes give us instructions on how to live meaningfully, purposefully, and joyfully by placing God at the center of one’s life, work, and activities. Led by Lloyd Poe and Scott Kruger in Room 1.
Justice in a World of Change ~
Evangelicals typically justify their political decisions based on how candidate or party rhetoric aligns with biblical values. This mentality will be pressed to the max in 2012 presidential campaign! Whether the catchphrase is “fairness” “Wall Street” “middle class” “tax the rich,” “income inequality” or a host of other shibboleths, the trademark will be economic justice. The Christian’s strategic decision will be determined by his or her dexterity to relate theology to political economy. Timothy Keller’s new book Generous Justice will help us explore the ethical foundations and theological contours of a political economy that is at once non-theocratic yet biblically theocentric. Led by Scott Daniels in Room 27.
Christianity 101: What Christians Believe ~
What do Christians believe that sets us apart from other religions and worldviews? What are the basic beliefs that Christians throughout the ages have affirmed? Using the Apostles Creed as our starting point, we will examine the core Christian beliefs with lots of Bible reading, discussion and question and answer time. This class is designed to be a good starting point for those who are new to the faith and/or want to explore what it means to be a Christian, but it will also be a good refresher for anyone who wants to review what is distinctive about what Christians believe and how it relates to our lives in the world we live in today. Led by Glenn Kurtz and Dave Watson in Room 25.
